David Staples: Will Alberta Premier Kenney deliver on his make-or-break "Best Summer Ever" promise?

Article content
Is this really going to be Alberta’s “Best Summer Ever,” as Premier Jason Kenney promised on April 1?
“If we just stick to our guns for a few more weeks we’ll head into what I truly believe will be the best summer in Alberta history,” Kenney said.

This approach is doomed to failure. If there’s any major controversy around any one part of a new proposed curriculum, it ends up stalling, then derailing desperately needed fixes in other areas, such as in computer science.
For two decades leading Alberta computer scientists have pushed hard for better computer science education in our schools, especially in the earliest grades. ....

Alberta's New Curriculum: Ditching the Regressive Theory of Discovery Learning

Alberta’s New Curriculum: Ditching the Regressive Theory of Discovery Learning
Commentary
Alberta is hoping to pilot a new K-6 curriculum soon, and not surprisingly it has upset some parents, the NDP, and the teachers’ union. There are a lot of entrenched interests standing in the way, but hopefully Albertans will see this curriculum implemented. It is guided by the best evidence about student learning and developing critical thinking skills.
The new curriculum rejects the discovery-learning model promoted in Canadian curricula since the 2000s. Discovery learning’s roots go back much earlier, to American theorist John Dewey who advanced the idea in the early 1900s. It has remained popular ever since, despite its failings. ....
