The officer, who used the fake name Michael Scott, broke his little finger as a result of hitting the activist after the accusation had been made at a political meeting. The inquiry also heard that a second undercover officer allegedly made a violent threat against a woman who had identified him as a spy. The inquiry, which is led by the former judge Sir John Mitting, is looking at the activities of 139 undercover officers who have spied on more than 1,000 political groups since 1968. In its current phase it is examining undercover operations in the 1970s and early 80s. ....

February 2, 1979 is a well-known date – if, that is, you are a big fan of the U.K. punk band, the Sex Pistols. I got into the Pistols when I was a kid, back in the late 1970s. To be correct, I was just twelve when the Pistols’ one and only album, Never Mind the Bollocks, hit the stores in the latter part of 1977. The members: Steve Jones (guitarist), Johnny Rotten (vocalist), Glen Matlock (bassist), and Paul Cook (drummer). Matlock wasn’t destined to stay with the band, however. He was replaced by Sid Vicious, who could barely play the bass. Unfortunately, while Matlock was a great song-writer, Vicious was a hopeless junkie who was hooked on heroin – which is, without a doubt at all, one of the most dangerous drugs out there, and that should be avoided at all times. As for that date, February 2, 1979, that’s when stupid, pathetic Sid died. He was just twenty-one.
