As the nation suffered through a devastating winter surge of coronavirus cases, the phones at Old Dominion Pediatrics in Virginia rang off the hook. Callers with infected family members sought advice on ways to quarantine at home so others would not become ill.
But no one asked about the flu.
And the test results Eric Freeman was seeing showed that dozens of his patients had the coronavirus, but almost none were testing positive for influenza.
COVID has just been the dominant viral pathogen right now, and it really has not allowed flu enough space to populate adequately, Freeman said in an interview Monday. I haven t had a rapid flu test positive in my office since before Thanksgiving. ....

Prior to the emergence of new mutants of the coronavirus, such as the British variant B.1.1.7, the SARS-CoV-2 variant named D614G had already mutated from the original SARS-CoV-2 pathogen that triggered the pandemic.
D614G has rapidly spread to become the most abundant variant worldwide and this D614G mutation remains in all the new emerging variants. An international team including researchers from Bern has now been able to demonstrate in both the laboratory and in animal models why the D614G variant was able to gain the upper hand over the original SARS-CoV-2 virus. ....

In November, as fall was fading, Matt Binnicker began to hunker down for a hard winter. The coronavirus had already infected an estimated 13 million people nationwide, and his team at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, was now peering over the precipice of flu season, when every coughing, feverish patient would need not one diagnostic test, but two.
Determined to stay one step ahead, Binnicker’s lab had worked furiously to develop its own influenza test in order to amp up capacity. On December 1, the team began screening all patients with respiratory symptoms for both viruses. ....
