Forsyth judge sets $1 million bond for Winston-Salem man charged in 2016 fatal shooting.

A Forsyth County judge set bond at $1 million for a Winston-Salem man charged with first-degree murder in a 2016 fatal shooting.
Harry Lee Hunter Jr., 31, is accused of fatally shooting Joshua Bernard Brown, 27, of Argonne Boulevard, just after 8 a.m. on April 30, 2016. A trial date has not been set in the case, and he has, for the most part, been held without bond at the Forsyth County Jail. At some point, he was sent to Central Regional Hospital in Raleigh for evaluation.
David Freedman, his attorney, made a request that a hearing be held so that bond could be set. Judge David Hall of Forsyth Superior Court set the bond at $1 million and ordered Hunter not to have contact with Brownâs family. ....

Newman defense: Any misconduct not 'willful,' no disrepute for office

In closing statements on the third day of the hearing on District Attorney Greg Newman’s removal from office, his defense attorneys said there has been no proven loss of trust in his office and that his misconduct doesn t rise to the level of willful.
Newman is facing removal from office under G.S. 7A-66 after a group of citizens filed an affidavit in Henderson County Superior Court on Feb. 11.
Judge Robert C. Ervin found grounds to continue proceedings under that statute based on willful misconduct in office and conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice, which brings the office into disrepute. ....

Henderson County News: LIVE COVERAGE: Attorneys make closing arguments in D.A. removal hearing

Superior Court Judge Robert C. Ervin of Morganton is presiding over the hearing based on a complaint filed with the clerk of Superior Court in February that Newman had committed acts of misconduct that brought his office into disrepute. Under the state law governing the removal of a D.A., evidence must show by clear and convincing that the elected prosecutor engaged in willful misconduct. An independent counsel Erwin appointed said that the two days of testimony and evidence had proved that; Newman s defense said the case had fallen short.

District Attorney Greg Newman maintains he's done his job properly

Testifying April 12 before a judge in a hearing on his removal from office, District Attorney Greg Newman remained adamant that he’s done his job properly even in the face of the state bar finding otherwise.
Newman, who has served as the District Attorney for District 29 B since 2013 representing Henderson, Transylvania and Polk counties, is in district court this week for a hearing on whether he should be removed from office.
In an earlier hearing, Judge Robert Ervin ruled that the independent counsel did not have to relitigate findings of fact in Newman’s disciplinary cases before the state bar, which were a large portion of the focus of Newman’s questioning. ....
