Little Indonesia, Somersworth, NH opening phase I cultural center


SOMERSWORTH Area residents looking to experience Indonesian culture have an opportunity Saturday, May 15.
The grand opening of the new Indonesian Cultural Center is being held from 3 to 6 p.m. at 156 High St. in Somersworth.
The event, which will show off the center s exhibitions and include food vendors, is being called Phase 1 of the plan to create the world s first Little Indonesia district in the Hilltop City.
An estimated 2,000 of Somersworth’s approximately 11,000 residents are Indonesian immigrants or of Indonesian descent, which, combined with neighboring communities, gives New Hampshire’s Seacoast one of the largest Indonesian populations north of Manhattan.
The vision is to build community and enhance the relationship between Indonesia and the U.S., said Raude Raychel, president of Indonesian Community Connect. ....

Civics 101 hosts Nick Capodice and Hannah McCarthy asked K-12 students from around the Granite State and across the country to record a short audio or video clip using the prompt: 
There Ought To Be a Law.
They asked students to identify a problem and propose a law to help solve it.
This is the fourth year 
Civics 101 invited students to put their skills and interest to the test, as a hands-on way to explore the fundamentals of U.S. democracy and its institutions.

CONCORD Nearly a year after George Floyd’s killing, efforts to enact police and racial justice reforms in New Hampshire are moving forward, with some exceptions.
Republican Gov. Chris Sununu created a law enforcement accountability commission last summer, and many of its recommendations have been implemented via executive order, including overhauling the state’s police training standards, requiring state troopers to wear body cameras and establishing a public integrity unit within the state’s Department of Justice.
Earlier this month, the Senate approved a bill implementing other recommendations, such as creating a matching fund to pay for police body cameras and requiring agreements between school districts and school resource officers to be made public. But the Senate, which is led by Republicans, removed requirements in the bill to include rac ....
