A black man is preparing to head out to paint the town red (this was in 1998, before anyone responds with questions about the legality of leaving one’s house to socialise). As is the case with too many black people’s stories, this is only going to end one way: badly. But this is not, despite the show’s title, a typical case of verbal abuse and a bit of argy-bargy in some nightclub. Some people even think that one hasn’t really lived unless one has been barred from at least one pub in one’s lifetime. ....

Critics Skeptical as Alberta Reverses Course on Open-pit Coal Mines

The highly unpopular premier also characterized opponents of coal mining as urban snobs even though the majority of the opposition has come from his party’s angry base: ranchers, farmers, landowners and rural towns and municipalities.
The government’s abrupt change of course follows weeks of protests from hundreds of thousands of Albertans from all walks of life and all political parties.
They raised concerns about water security, selenium pollution (a legacy of open-pit coal mines), and the future of the province’s iconic eastern slopes.
Landowner and conservation groups greeted today’s announcement with skepticism.
“I’d call my response very guarded,” said Renie Blades, a third-generation rancher in Alberta’s foothills. ....

Last week Alberta’s government tried to hide political reality by issuing statements implying the “passion” of citizens had convinced it to back off its efforts to bring open-pit coal mining to a vast, ecologically-vital portion of the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains. ....

Wednesday Bird Droppings: The Orioles continue to get good news about their minor leaguers

Wednesday Bird Droppings: The Orioles continue to get good news about their minor leaguers
Tyler Young
Good morning Birdland,
This sort of situation is exactly what Mike Elias had in mind when he took over the reigns of the Orioles two years ago. His plan was clear. The big league team would struggle to win while the organization bolstered the farm system through an influx of talented players, coaches, and analysts.
Now, prospect rankings done by media outlets are not the same as how the various organizations regard these players. And those rankings certainly don’t mean that the Orioles will be a World Series contender in short order. But at the very least they are a sign of tangible progress that those both inside and outside of the team can point to and say “See? We are getting closer.” ....

Sarasota tries to find path forward for homeless service nonprofits

Sarasota tries to find path forward for homeless service nonprofits
SARASOTA – After some wrangling, the city of Sarasota thinks it finally has a way to allow community-minded organizations to provide showers and other services for homeless residents in the city.
But while the majority of city commissioners agreed to research a special zoning and permitting program to allow for such services, many felt the effort would be regressive and hinder the city’s protracted efforts to address homelessness.
Even Streets of Paradise, the nonprofit that city leaders want to help, says the effort is halfhearted and short lived.
“We’re grateful for the pathway forward, but it appeared to be less than a genuine pathway,” Cathy Bryant, director of operations for Streets of Paradise, told the Herald-Tribune.   ....
