Harm reduction group says record 2020 overdose deaths due to B.C. government's flat-footed reaction in pandemic

There was a record number of illicit-drug overdose deaths in British Columbia in 2020. And the Canadian Association for Safe Supply has linked this high number to inaction on the part of the provincial government.
According to the group s cofounder, Jordan Westfall, the province was caught flat-footed during a pandemic when we needed physical distancing and safe supply .
In a news release, he said that few could access that supply and it wasn’t exactly safe, although patients were never told that.”
That needs to change, Westfall said, 83,000 people struggle with opioid dependence placing them at higher overdose risk. ....

COVID-19 Restrictions Lead to Police Calls, Eviction Warnings in SRO Buildings

Erica Grant and David Mendes live in the Savoy, a single-room occupancy hotel building on East Hastings Street operated by Atira Property Management, which manages several buildings in the neighbourhood.
Grant was warned she could be evicted after police were called to the building on Jan. 2 to arrest her 29-year-old son, who had been banned from the Savoy at the end of December.
Mendes said he was visited the next day by police officers looking for a guest of another tenant. Officers pulled him out of his apartment and went in to search for that guest, he said. ....
