DESPITE extensive research, relatively little is known about Shakespeare and his work and, consequently, popular scholarship tends to focus on the language and dramaturgy of the Bard’s extant plays.
Fortunately, compared with his contemporaries, many of his plays have survived through fellow actors posthumously collecting 36 of them in the famous First Folio.
Theatre historian David McInnis recognises that rather than being an isolated artist foreseeing his world reputation, this busy working dramatist, feeding the insatiable daily theatre appetite of Elizabethan and early Jacobean audiences, must essentially have responded to the currents of popularity and fashion, as important in the 16th and 17th centuries as they are today.
Erin Mitchell is no stranger to Omahaâs music scene. Sheâs in indie bands like Daisy Distraction and MagÅ«. She sings and plays keyboard and guitar. Sheâs been playing music since she started singing at school talent shows when she was nine, but just recently, with her own band Urn, has she been able to make music that is entirely hers.
Urnâs debut EP, âAn Attempt to Quiet the Noise,â was released April 16. It took nearly four years of work for Mitchell to achieve a record she felt embraced her identity as a songwriter.
Mitchell said âAn Attempt to Quiet the Noiseâ changed significantly in the last four years. Where the EP was originally populated by slow piano ballads, itâs now more guitar-focused, traversing through a diverse range of genres. For example, one track off the EP, âSticks & Stones,â has a folk feel to it that bandmate David McInnis said reminded him of Fleetwood Mac.
