How Glasgow paved the way for the steamboat industry


LOOKING back at the early years of the 19th century, Glasgow was fortunate that several individuals simultaneously came to the fore who would have a huge impact on the development of the city.
Last week I told the story of the remarkable Kirkman Finlay, the merchant who almost single-handedly boosted Glasgow’s trading links by using his political links to take on the East India Company in Parliament and end its monopoly of trade with Asia in 1813. Finlay was rightly lauded for his contribution to Glasgow long before he died at the home he built, Castle Toward on the Cowal peninsula, in 1842. ....

Glasgow memories: Steamship pioneer Henry Bell put Clyde on the map


HE HAD a way with words, did Henry Bell, steamship pioneer and public baths owner who was born this month 254 years ago.
His advertisement in our sister newspaper The Glasgow Herald on August 14, 1812, beautifully captures the magic and romance of sailing down the Clyde on his fantastic new boat the PS Comet.
“The elegance, comfort, safety and speed of this Vessel requires only to be proved, to meet the approbation of the Public and the Proprietor is determined to do everything in his power to merit public encouragement,” the ad waxes lyrical.
Henry has, he says, “at much expense fitted up a handsome VESSEL to ply upon the RIVER CLYDE BETWEEN GLASGOW AND GREENOCK – to sail by the Power of Wind, Air and Steam…” ....
