Ezard wins fourth term as Jacksonville mayor Jacksonville Mayor Andy Ezard will return to his office for a fourth term following his victory Tuesday night in the city s mayoral election. Ezard received 81% or 1,601 votes, with all 18 city precincts reporting Tuesday night. The Jacksonville native defeated business owner Nicole Riley, who received about 19% or 366 votes. Ezard has served as mayor since 2009. In other contested area races: Sangamon County Buffalo: Incumbent village trustees Doug Badgley and David Bueltmann won reelection Badgley receiving 26% of the vote (54 votes) and Bueltmann receiving 24% percent of the vote (50 votes). The final spot on the board remains up for grabs, with Citizens Party candidate Thomas Paige and independent Jennifer Dennison each separated by one vote. Paige has received 13.40 percent of the vote (28 votes), while Dennison has received 12.92% of the vote (27 votes). ....
Property tax and transparency issues have motivated a Jacksonville business owner to challenge Mayor Andy Ezard, providing the incumbent with his first challenge since his inaugural mayoral run in 2009. Nicole Riley, owner of Soap Co. Coffee Shop and Freya & Co. Salon in Jacksonville, will oppose Ezard in Tuesday s municipal elections. Ezard, a lifelong resident of the city, has served as mayor since 2009 and has run unopposed in each of the last two mayoral races in 2013 and 2017. He received 86% of the vote 784 votes in the Feb. 23 primary, while Riley took 12% 112 votes. Ezard wants people to know that his experience which includes four years serving as the city clerk prior to being elected as mayor is being used to work hard for the people, even in unpredictable times like right now, with COVID-19 affecting all facets of life throughout the city. ....

(AP) Two people have been arrested after police responded to what they called a suspicious fire at a hotel in Berlin that critically injured a woman. A fire ignited in the 56-year-old woman s room at the Hilltop Inn early Saturday morning, Berlin police said. No one at the hotel called authorities to report the fire, and it was approximately six hours before an ambulance was called and took the injured woman to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, police said. Police said Monday that they arrested Melissa Guptil, 32, who used to work at the hotel, on charges of reckless endangerment and tampering with facilities for disabling the smoke detector in the woman s room. David Darnell, 39, who lives and works at the hotel, is facing a charge of reckless endangerment. It was not immediately known if either has an attorney. ....
