Now mulling lawsuit, Gresham Police Chief forced to resign
Decision comes in wake of third-party investigation, claims of hostile workplace
Gresham Police Chief Robin Sells submitted her resignation from the city of Gresham Friday morning, Feb. 19.
In a letter sent to city leadership, she emphasized the resignation was not voluntary, coming on the heels of a third-party investigation that highlighted a hostile workplace within the Gresham Police Department under her direction.
I am not resigning voluntarily, but as a direct result of the city s choice to release a deeply flawed report without affording me due process, Sells wrote.
The investigation was conducted by Barran Liebman LLP at the direction of Gresham City Council, and sought to weigh dueling complaints filed by Chief Sells and Deputy City Manager Corey Falls against one another. Accusations made by a prominent Gresham city employee about years of mistreatment, harassment and abuse while working at the Gresham Police Department and City Hall have been substantiated by a third-party, independent investigation.
Last summer Gresham City Council hired Paula Barran, of Barran Liebman LLP, to look into alleged incidents occurring within several city departments. A city of Newberg employee has filed a lawsuit against her employer and a long list of former department heads.
Brittney Jeffries filed the lawsuit through her counsel, Portland attorney Dan Thenell. The lawsuit, filed Jan. 15 in Yamhill County Circuit Court, alleges sexual discrimination, retaliation for whistleblowing, harassment and workplace violations of her First Amendment rights. The lawsuit claims that city officials were made aware of the hostile work environment in which Jeffries found herself but did not take substantive action to stop it. ....
