Midnight Cowboy, the only X-rated movie to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Frankel covers the film’s main contributors: James Leo Hurlihy, whose 1965 novel was the basis for the movie; director John Schlesinger, who took a chance on a novel “so bleak, troubling and sexually raw no ordinary film studio would go near it”; formerly blacklisted screenwriter Waldo Salt; actors Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman (whom Frankel interviewed); and casting director Marion Dougherty, who convinced Schlesinger to take a chance on then-unknown Voight. Missouri residents have the opportunity to set poetry or poets, at least in motion, during the nomination process for the state’s sixth poet laureate.
Nominations are open through March 22 and can be made via the Missouri Arts Council website. Poets can nominate themselves or be nominated by another person.
The state’s current poet laureate, Springfield’s Karen Craigo, will complete her two-year term this year. The first poet to receive the distinction was mid-Missouri resident Walter Bargen, who held the title from 2008-10. ....

Public nominations for Missouri's next Poet Laureate open

Public nominations are open now through March 22 for Missouri’s next Poet Laureate. The Missouri Poet Laureate fosters the art of poetry, encourages literacy and learning, and encourages the reading and writing of poetry across the state, enriching Missourians’ lives by sharing and promoting poetry through public appearances, readings, workshops, and digital and social media.
Starting July 1, the Missouri Poet Laureate will serve a two-year term. Poets must be Missouri residents and at least 25 years old as of July 1. All nominations are welcome, including nominations by poets themselves.
