They carried signs, shouted chants and disrupted the order of the day. Protesters then and still do want people to pay attention to the problem and the trauma, and they want change. The majority of protests in Nashville occur without incident although the city saw an exception last year. Pastors, a protest leader and police shared their thoughts on why most demonstrations in the city tend to be peaceful. Pastor Kelli X, who leads The Village Church, said everyone in Nashville is connected to someone. The connectedness of the city creates space for peace, she said. ....
A 24-hour demonstration to celebrate community and peaceful coexistence, and gather against violence kicked off Friday in Nashville. The effort, 24 Hour Display of Power: 24 Hours of Complete Peace, will focus on solidarity and building power amongst community members in an effort to take back the city, community organizer Gicola Lane said Friday. A rally and march in connection with the demonstration are slated for Saturday. The goal is to really just call for absolute peace across the city, Lane said. Our community is in pain. We have experienced a large influx of violence from multiple directions. We ve lost a lot of people to both community and police violence.. We re asking the entire city to display unity. ....

Thelma Harper, Tennessee s longest-serving female state senator and the first Black woman to be elected to the chamber, died Thursday. Harper, a Democrat from Nashville, was 80 years old. Her death was confirmed by members of both the Tennessee Senate and House Democratic caucuses who had been in touch with Harper s family, though the circumstances of her death are unclear. Elected in 1991, Harper made history serving for 30 years as a state senator. But she was also a prominent Nashvillian in her roles as a mentor and mother figure in the community, easily recognizable by her signature hats. ....
