KUT A former Home Depot in the St. Johns neighborhood, in North Austin, was used as a COVID-19 testing site last year. The Austin City Council has agreed to let a real estate developer and a local public housing authority build affordable housing on the city-owned site. There’s a swath of land in North Austin along Interstate 35 that has had many uses. It has been an orphanage, an elementary school, a Home Depot and COVID-19 testing site. Next? Maybe housing and office space. On Thursday, members of the Austin City Council agreed to enter into a contract with a real estate developer and a local public housing authority to redevelop the city-owned site in the St. Johns neighborhood. Darwin Belliard is a Second Amendment supporter and a gun owner himself. As he says, “I’m all for everyone being armed.” But the army veteran and Louisville resident says that owning firearms isn’t enough when it comes to saving lives. “I feel, as well as you can shoot, you should be able to plug holes, as well,” he told a local Louisville new station this week. WLKY-TV highlighted Belliard’s work in the community, which includes hosting a series of public classes over the summer teaching people how to treat gunshot wounds. Danielle Austin moved to Austin for work in 1997, shortly after graduating from college. Two years later she met Ron Austin, who had moved from Miami, and they later married. They bought a home in North Austin in 2004, but as their family grew and their needs changed, the Austins moved to Pflugerville with their two children, where they have lived for about six years. “We needed more space and wanted to make sure we found a school district with good education programs and where athletics and extracurricular activities were active and built up,” Ron Austin said.
