RALEIGH, N.C. (WECT) - The Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice has named Stephen Jacobs as the new warden of Tabor Correctional Institution in Tabor City.
Jacobs, 53, began his career in 1993 as a correctional officer at the former Cabarrus Correctional Center. He has worked at Craven and Wayne Correctional Institutions, and served as warden at Columbus Correctional Institution from 2018 to 2020. Jacobs had been serving as the warden at Lumberton Correctional Institution in Lumberton since 2020. ....

RALEIGH, N.C. (WECT) - North Carolina’s Department of Public Safety has agreed to release at least 3,500 people in state custody within the next six months to settle a lawsuit filed by civil rights organizations.
The state conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and American Civil Liberties Union argued that conditions at state prisons amid the coronavirus pandemic were unconstitutional. According to the DPS dashboard, the number of offenders that have tested positive for COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic reached 9,632 as of February 26. Of the 47 offenders that have died, four deaths happened at the Pender Correctional Institution and two occurred at Tabor Correctional Institution. ....

Robert Charles “R.C.” Soles Jr., a top Democratic lawmaker who represented Columbus County in the N.C. legislature for more than four decades before retiring in 2011, died on Friday at a South Carolina hospital. He was 86. His funeral was on Monday.
A controversial figure for much of his political career, Soles faced many accusations of abusing his authority and threatening his opponents. Later in his career, the Tabor City lawyer was dogged by allegations of sexual misconduct  charges he vehemently denied. ....

Feb. 6 RALEIGH R.C. Soles Jr., who represented his native Columbus County in the General Assembly for 42 years and became one of the state s top Democratic lawmakers before retiring after shooting a former legal client in the leg, has died at age 86.
His death at a hospital in Loris, South Carolina, south of Tabor City, on Friday was announced by the Inman Ward Funeral Home and first reported by The News Reporter in Whiteville, the county seat where Soles practiced law for decades. ....
