The $20,000 National Contemporary Art Award regularly attracts art that challenges the viewer and compels them to consider social and environmental issues, as well as the very nature of what constitutes art. A dead moa lies among the historic buildings in the Christchurch Arts Centre, surrounded by native birds looking on in mourning. An emotional and colourful new sculpture by Wellington artist Sorawit Songsataya has been installed in the centre as part of the ongoing Scape Public Art festival, which began in October. The sculpture, called The Interior, features a life-size blue moa on the ground by Market Square in the Arts Centre as other birds peer on sadly from their perches on nearby railings. Supplied ....
