Danny Hay is confident the OlyWhites squad for the Tokyo Olympics will be as strong as possible. The last time the OlyWhites took part in the Olympic men’s football tournament, in London in 2012, a third of their 18-strong squad were playing in amateur competitions in New Zealand. Nine years on, when they head to the Tokyo Olympics in July, there are likely to be several overseas-based professionals who miss out – a sign of the progress that has been made during the 2010s. With their opponents, South Korea, Honduras, and Romania, now locked in, coach Danny Hay has a little over two months to finalise his 18-man squad, which will consist predominantly of under-24 players (those born in 1997 or later), but can also include three over-age players, and his four travelling reserves, who can only be called on as injury replacements. ....
Catherine Ivill/Getty Images Coach Danny Hay is looking forward to the OlyWhites having an “acid test” at the Tokyo Olympics in July. New Zealand’s under-24 men’s football team could find themselves in a pool with Brazil and Germany at the Tokyo Olympics in July, or with Argentina and Spain, or – in a worst-case scenario – with hosts Japan, Mexico, and France. Phoenix displayed a masterclass in finishing after they saw off Perth Glory to claim their third victory of the A-League campaign. An impenetrable defence saw Wellington secure back-to-back clean sheets in the process as they built upon last weekend’s victory at the Newcastle Jets. A screamer by Reno Piscopo on the half hour mark saw Phoenix go ahead against the run of play before David Ball scored for successive matches when he connected with James McGarry’s cross five minutes later. ....
Bruno Fornaroli pinched the ball from Craig Noone and slipped it to Castro, who found Daniel Stynes. From there, Stynes long-range shot deflected off Carlo Armiento and wrongfooted Tom Glover. But City hit back in the 33rd minute when Noone s shot ricocheted off the post and into the path of Maclaren, who this time made no mistake with the finish. City s relief would last just nine minutes as Ingham, who had hit the crossbar seven minutes into the game, put Glory in front with a diving header in the 42nd. The linesman initially flagged the defender offside from Neil Kilkenny s skidding corner, but the decision was overturned after a VAR review. ....
Richard Garcia has enjoyed a dream start to his A-League coaching career after a Nick D'Agostino brace helped lift Perth Glory to a crushing 5-3 win over Adelaide United at HBF Park. ....
