Buncombe County predicts lower state testing scores because of COVID

Local schools anticipate students will not perform as well as usual in state testing due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s weighty strain on education. 
Buncombe County Schools Director of Testing Steve Earwood said because “many students have had their education disrupted,” the district is preparing for lower test scores. 
“The results may be lower than they would have been in a normal year, but it will be reflective of the learning that has taken place,” Earwood said. “We may find that the students will do much better than we think they will. We don’t know which is why we need the assessments to accurately gauge the impact COVID has had on the education of our students.” ....

NC teachers to start getting COVID vaccine Feb. 24, governor says

North Carolina teachers, other school workers and child care providers will start getting vaccinated against the COVID-19 disease on Feb. 24, Gov. Roy Cooper announced on Wednesday, and teachers are glad.
“Yes, it is excellent news!” said teacher Daniel Withrow, president of the Asheville City Association of Educators. “So many school staff are desperate to return to in-person learning, but are concerned for their health, the health of their students, and the health of their communities.”
So far, the vaccine has been largely limited to health care workers, long-term care residents and long-term care center staff, and people 65 and older. The expansion to teachers will significantly increase demand, Cooper said at a coronavirus news conference in Raleigh. ....

Police: Berlin man smashed table over loud music


BARRE – A Berlin man is accused of going into someone’s apartment and smashing a table over loud music.
Alex Nathan Ballantyne, 40, pleaded not guilty Monday in Washington County criminal court in Barre to a felony count of unlawful trespass into an occupied residence and misdemeanor counts of unlawful mischief and aggravated disorderly conduct. If convicted, Ballantyne faces a maximum sentence of four and a half years in prison. He was released on conditions.
Officer Daniel Withrow, of the Berlin police, said in his affidavit an altercation was reported Saturday on Slayton Avenue. Withrow said he met the victim outside the home and he asked the officer to come inside showed him a broken glass coffee table. ....
