New Xewkija project labelled 'horrendous'

The application, PA 8409/20, at Triq l-Imġarr and Triq il-Bennejja, is seeking approval for internal and external alterations of the existing dwelling, consisting of limited demolition of its rooms on the ground and first floors.
But it also proposes excavation and construction of basement and groundfloor garages, a domestic store and 32 apartments on four floors around it.
Its plan is to “integrate” the existing façade on Triq il-Bennejja into the new project. But proposed streetscape elevations show a house dwarfed in a block of flats and question its incorporation into the development.
The application seems to have gone under the radar and heritage NGO Din l-Art Helwa is not a registered objector. ....

Activists in last-ditch bid to save modernist house

Activists are urging the Planning Authority to reconsider a recommendation for approval of a planning application to demolish a modernist house in Balzan, ahead of a hearing tomorrow.
Walmarville, or the Diamond House, as it is known among Balzan residents, has an iconic pink facade and features signature green, diamond-shaped glass panels incorporated in the galvanised steel gates and railings that face Old Railway Street.
The building is a favourite among photographers, having been featured on popular blogs such as Malta Doors and even immortalised in a minimalist print by local design house Te fit-Tazza.
An application by DRZ Properties seeks to demolish the building and construct a maisonette and three apartments, including a pool at penthouse level, with a garage and four car spaces at basement level. The application was re-commended for approval by the PA case officer. ....

COVID-19 victims remembered in stunning Holy Week installation

The victims of COVID-19 have been remembered in a stunning Holy Week installation in Għajnsielem.
Entitled The Cross, Jesus and You , the project is made up of 800 crosses constructed from recycled wood and displayed on Gozo church s parapet stairs.
After sunset, they are lit in violet to represent Lent while the 394 victims of the virus are symbolised by crosses painted white.
For the second year in a row, Easter will be celebrated in Malta under a semi-shutdown to contain the spread of the virus.

Let me first place on record a personal interest: I am reviewing a book to which I have contributed a short preface. Apart from that, I was totally extraneous to anything that went into the architecture of this volume. If this is a conflict of interest, I apologise. Malta is now promoted as the Republic of Institutional Loopholes.
Overlooking a pinhole does not place an unbearable strain on my conscience.
Where do I begin? Dr Farrugia has the overview of all the government archives and is familiar with, I guess, most of the other notable hoards of documents in Malta, whether they rest with private families, in clubs, in convents, in parishes, in businesses, in museums. All these turned into his trawling grounds – to enrich this truly magnificent book. ....

The Ġgantija Temples, originating circa 3,600-3,200 BCE, are among the oldest and most majestic freestanding buildings in the world. They are beautiful in scope, sublime in stature, and form a focal icon of Malta’s archaeological and artistic heritage.
It is beyond shocking that any developer would have the audacity to put forth a proposal to build 31 flats and 20 underground garages near the ancient temple. Such a monstrosity threatens both visitors’ enjoyment of the prehistoric area and obstructs archaeological research into the civilisation that erected these magnificent edifices. ....
