The Phoenix area city of Surprise names 6 finalists for police chief


Surprise has narrowed its police chief search to six finalists and expects to name a new police chief by the end of the month, city officials announced Monday. 
The northwest Valley suburb s former chief, Terry Young, stepped down in January to become Surprise s assistant city manager. Young had led the city s Police Department since 2015 after joining the Surprise department in 2010.
Assistant Police Chief Geoffrey Leggett was named interim chief. Leggett first joined the city force in 2011 and is one of the finalists for the position. The others include Aaron Jelcick, Daniel O Neil, Benny Pina, Robert Sanders and Doug Shoemaker. 
The city received 62 applications for police chief. Three of the six candidates are local to Arizona, two are from Washington and one is from Colorado. Here are the six finalists.  ....

It s been 14 years since that fateful day when a gunman opened fire in Norris Hall, but the commitment to commemorate is stronger than ever.
April 16, 2007 is forever a part of Virginia Tech, said Mark Owczaraki, University Spokesperson. When tragedy falls upon the community, coming together and supporting one another is essential. That was one of the critical, critical lessons that we learned and experienced 14 years ago. ....

A closer look at Worcester’s 2020 payroll: 90 of 100 top earners are police officers

Members of the Worcester Police Department represented 90 of the city’s top 100 earners in 2020, according to payroll records.
City Manager Edward Augustus Jr. took home the highest paycheck, making a total of $279,770 in 2020, keeping on trend with payroll records from previous years. Police Chief Steven Sargent received the city’s second-largest salary, taking home $239,130, records indicate.
Aside from police officers, a handful of other employees are among the highest-paid workers, including the city’s assistant city manager, administrators at the Worcester Public Schools, the city solicitor and the late DPW head. ....
