With only 18 race-meetings left in the season, Size is in the middle of a titanic struggle for the trainers’ championship, currently level with Caspar Fownes on 59 wins, while Danny Shum (54), Francis Lui (53) and Frankie Lor (53) are snapping at their heels. Size saddles half-a-dozen contenders at his favourite track, including all-weather specialist Super Alliances who, despite a below-par effort back in March, has been given a winning chance again in the six-furlong handicap at 2.15pm. ....

SHA TIN’s feature race of the day sees the reappearance of the unbeaten Winner Method, seeking a four-timer in the Grass Island Handicap (1:15pm) over five furlongs. The son of Deep Field ran, in his jockey’s post-race comments, “a little bit flat” but still proved too strong for rivals when last seen in March and has subsequently been freshened up by trainer Danny Shum. Despite top-weight, his odds are going to be very short and he does have dangerous rival in Carroll Street from the all-conquering Douglas Whyte stable – six winners from his last 34 runners – and young whizz-kid Jerry Chau aboard in opposition. ....

Rated perfectly in the lead by Purton, Hongkong Great clocked 1m 36.15s on the dirt surface to lower the classy Gun Pit’s mark of 1m 36.34s, set in 2015, in cruising to a gaping victory in the Class 2 Carnation Handicap (1650m, dirt). While COVID-19 remains the largest impediment to Shum’s ambitions, he has little doubt the Lookin At Lucky gelding can acquit himself strongly regardless of where the horse travels. ....

Shum and Purton have been one of the dominant partnerships this season with a 25 per cent win strike-rate, one of the main reasons why the local trainer is challenging for the trainers’ title.
