New mums have been celebrating International Midwives Day by thanking their midwives for their care and support as they gave birth during the pandemic. Emma Penrice, of Workington, said: “Myself, and my other half, Jonathan Williams, would like to thank all the midwives and the team who helped bring baby Rory Williams into the world on April 17 at the West Cumberland Hospital. “For the majority of my care, I saw midwife Sarah Hargreaves, both in the community and on the labour ward. It was lovely to have a familiar face helping me through especially at the end when I felt all my energy was depleted. ....
Image: Chorley Council The oldest surviving cotton mill building in Chorley will remain largely intact after revised plans were approved to turn it into modern apartments. Planning permission was granted in 2019 to redevelop the landmark five-storey mill on Standish Street in the town centre to create 48 new dwellings. That would have involved the demolition of both wings of the early eighteenth century building – with the central core and chimney being retained – and three new floors added to the western side of it. However, the scheme has now been rethought, with the number of apartments reduced to 30 – and more of the original structure left standing. ....

Site for new McDonald\ s A new drive-through McDonald’s restaurant is coming to a suburb of Chorley – less than two miles from another branch in the town centre. The fast food operator has secured permission for a second 24-hour outlet in the borough, in the car park of the Tesco store on Foxhole Road near Astley Village. It says it will be a locally-run franchise which will create 65 new jobs. Chorley Council’s planning committee gave the green light to the proposal, but members were served up a menu of concerns from residents – and some of their own number. ....
