For example, Amazon, Google, and Facebook use algorithms to tailor what users see, and Uber and Lyft use them to match passengers with drivers and set prices. Do users, customers, employees, and others have a right to know how companies that use algorithms make their decisions? In a new analysis, researchers explore the moral and ethical foundations to such a right. They conclude that the right to such an explanation is a moral right, then address how companies might do so. Schultze won the seat over two competitors during the town’s annual election Monday, picking up 559 votes, nearly double that of runner-up Bohda Raut Chhetry, who had 280 votes. The third candidate, Autumn Richard, had 157 votes. The board’s incumbent, longtime local politician James McCaffrey, did not run for re-election. Just 1,005, or about 15% of Millis’ 6,692 registered voters, cast ballots in Monday’s election. Three other races emerged by election day. Nicole Riley kept her seat on the Planning Board over challenger Taewan Kim, with 706 votes to Kim’s 222. Image Credit: robert mcgillivray/Shutterstock.com Researchers used a 25-year record of satellite observations to demonstrate, for the first time, wide-ranging increases in ice speed throughout the Getz sector, where some portion of ice accelerated into the ocean by almost 50%. Led by the University of Leeds, the study describes that in the Getz region, 14 glaciers are thinning and flowing faster than ever into the ocean. From 1994 to 2018, 315 gigatonnes of ice had been lost, increasing the global mean sea level by 0.9 mm, which is equivalent to 126 million Olympic swimming pools of water. ....
