Ross Douthat's conservative conservatism, a profile by Lydialyle Gibson

“It’s a strange moment to have written a book where part of the argument is that things are changing less than you think,” said Ross Douthat ’02 on a sunny weekday afternoon in July. He was sitting on the back deck of his home in New Haven, Connecticut, overlooking a profusion of ocean-blue hydrangeas and the patchwork of his neighborhood’s backyards: swing sets, flower beds, trees, fences.
Like much of the country, the
New York Times columnist had been holed up for months with his family, ever since the pandemic cut short the tour for his most recent book, ....

Go West, Old Man — The New Atlantis

My impression is that Ross Douthat, a conservative op-ed columnist for the
New York Times, is despite what posters to the comments section on his columns might say no Harry Lime. His latest book,
The Decadent Society: How We Became the Victims of Our Own Success is, however, somewhat Limean in its application of the Frontier thesis to humanity at large, and in its insistence on the connection between struggle, expansion, and progress.
A substantial book by one of the more serious people in American public life today,
The Decadent Society deserves a wide readership. As its subtitle, if not its title, suggests, it is far from a reactionary diatribe. Modern civilization has been spectacularly successful in many ways, Douthat affirms, and this is to the good. It’s just that nothing fails like success, and we are now confronted by problems that are not amenable to the ideas and methods that produced them. Above all, we are confronted by the problem of decadence ....

Israel's Vaccine Triumph - Meir Y. Soloveichik, Commentary Magazine

Israel’s Vaccine Triumph
LEVITICUS
DEUTERONOMY
‘We have discovered how to hit the Jews where they are the most vulnerable. The Jews love life, so that is what we shall take away from them. We are going to win, because we love death, and they love life.” So proclaimed Hassan Nasrallah, the secretary general of Hezbollah. His pathetic prediction aside, Nasrallah had Jews pegged pretty well; we do love life so. The Hebrew word for life,
chayim, is the essence of our aspiration on the High Holy Days: We beseech Almighty God, the
melekh chafetz ba-chayim,
sefer ha-chayim,
the book of life. And of course, as many Gentiles (and not a few Jews, alas) learned from ....

Contra Rod Dreher, Not All Signs Point to a Woke Dictatorship in Am...

17.29
There is much in Rod Dreher’s newest book, Live Not by Lies: A Manual for Christian Dissidents, that is true, insightful, and in need of serious consideration. At its best, the book forces an increasingly frayed and polarized Christian church to answer for its moral and political apathy. Yet Dreher’s work is missing something: a self-awareness, a careful sobriety, a consciousness that even those on the good side can unwittingly become the thing they seek to destroy.
Dreher, a columnist for The American Conservative and arguably the most-read conservative blogger on the internet, does not lack for eloquence or wisdom. He demonstrated his power of insight in his 2017 book The Benedict Option, a widely read manifesto calling for Western Christians to consciously reinvest in building their own communities of virtue instead of trying to win a culture war through politics. The Benedict Option was a stirring book that spoke powerfully to a church at a crossroads, and it ....
