Local filmmaker Devin Fei-Fan Tau follows four LGBTQ+ individuals as they prepare and climb Mount Hood.
Portland filmmaker Devin Fei-Fan Tau emigrated from Taiwan to suburban Los Angeles as a child and watched such iconic television shows as Star Trek to help him learn English.
So, when he had the opportunity to meet George Takei, who played Sulu on the original Star Trek TV series, he couldn t have been more thrilled. You know how people say you shouldn t meet your childhood hero because they might disappoint you? Tau said. Well, that was not the case. So respectful, so enjoyable, so polite, so cool. I was a fanboy.

Who’s on Top? The mountain climbing documentary, which releases May 18, focuses on a team of LGBTQ+ climbers that decide to climb Mount Hood. The film goes beyond the mountain and also goes into the challenges that LGBTQ+ climbers face within the community. It’s narrated by
Star Trek alum George Takei.

Who’s on Top? is a feature-length documentary that shines a spotlight on a diverse group of the LGBTQ+ community to challenge stereotypes about gender and sexuality in outdoor recreation. Historically excluded and ostracized as not belonging to the adventurer community, the climbers tackle not only a mountain, but assumptions about who they are and how they belong to the world of outdoor sports. This film portrays a journey like no other, a never-before-told story about what makes LGBTQ+ folks both distinct and connected, facing physical, mental and societal obstacles.
