SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 4S Ranch teen who participated in a Pfizer vaccine study is speaking out after clinical results were released Wednesday.
A waiting room photo shows then 15-year-old Kyle Sullivan and his mom in December, right before he got his first dose while participating in a Pfizer COVID vaccine study for teens ages 12 to 15.
A little stomach ache, headache, and a bit of a fever, said Sullivan.
Sullivan suffered a day of side effects after each of the doses. The study was recently unblinded, and he learned he did in fact, receive the vaccine. The results of the study were released Wednesday. Pfizer and BioNTech says in the trial of more than 2,200 participants, the vaccine s efficacy was 100% and it was well tolerated in the teens. ....

Taking the field: DNHS marching band returns


But now, for the first time in months, marching band is back at Del Norte High School.
“It’s marching band lite, I would call it,” said Dan Sedgwick, the music director at DNHS.
Earlier this month, Sedgwick and about forty of his students began practicing music and marching skills once again, after the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled most school activities in the fall.
“I can’t wait to get back,” Sedgwick said. “I’m stoked.”
Of course, band practice looks different that previous years, with many members wearing face masks on the field, but Sedgwick said they’re excited to be able to make it work. ....

Del Norte High senior Vivian Chung was recently named first alternate in the Distinguished Young Women of California program for the Class of 2021.
“I was really surprised,” Chung said. “I was watching the program online and (the other contestants) were so good. I was in awe of the other young ladies from around the state and was definitely shocked.”
Her accomplishments at the county and state competitions earned her a combined $6,350 in prizes. As the DYW of Greater San Diego County she received $1,000 plus $250 for the Hicks Family Self Expression Award. At the state competition she won $5,100, which consisted of $4,000 as first alternate, the $700 Interview Award and $400 Self-Expression Award. ....

Back to School: High schoolers return to campus


Alison Eckart usually likes to give her students high-fives.
So on Tuesday, the Del Norte High School principal had to learn to get used to air-fives, at least for a little while.
“It was surreal. It was surreal, I thought,” Eckart said.
Students returned to the high school Tuesday for in-person classes for the first time this school year after the county saw a reduction in virus tiers last week. While much was different about this “first day” of school, Eckert said the day was incredibly important.
“On a scale of one to 10, it’s about a 12. And I don’t mean that lightly,” Eckart said in an interview Tuesday afternoon, just a few hours after students left campus. ....
