Houma-Thibodaux area nonprofits receive $226,000 in grants


Here is the list of nonprofits and the grants they received:
A Place of Restoration: $7,500 for cooking equipment and food supplies to prepare hot meals for the needy.
Bayou Civic Club: $7,500 to replace the air-conditioning system in the Larose Civic Center gym.
Bunkhouse Shelter: $10,000 to provide emergency shelter and meals for homeless people in Terrebonne and Lafourche.
CASA of Lafourche: $4,000 to recruit and train CASA volunteers for the program, which help children from broken homes navigate the court system. 
CASA of Terrebonne: $6,000 to recruitment and train volunteers and support a tutoring program.
Catholic Community Center: $6,000 for food bank shelving and storage and distributing food and supplies to needy residents. ....

Louisiana legislators send big share of pet projects to their districts


Among the state-taxpayer-funded spending:
► $1 million for Pointe-aux-Chenes Elementary in Terrebonne Parish. The School Board has closed the school, citing low enrollment, but Native American residents are pushing to create a French immersion program there.
► $2 million for the Central Athletic Foundation in East Baton Rouge.
► $2.5 million for Johnston Street lighting in Lafayette.
► $110,000 to upgrade the computer system for the District Attorney’s Office that serves Ascension, Assumption and St. James parishes. 
About $48 million 56% of all lawmaker pet project funding went to 12 parishes represented by six powerful lawmakers who oversee the state’s finances, according to an analysis done by Louisiana Illuminator.  ....
