A federal civil rights inquiry by the U.S. Department of Justice was launched into the embattled police department in Minneapolis, a day after jurors convicted former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the killing of George Floyd, The Washington Post reported Thursday.
Attorney General Merrick Garland Wednesday said the wide-ranging investigation, known as a pattern-or-practice probe, will go beyond a separate federal criminal inquiry into Floyd s murder last year.
The DOJ will determine whether the Minneapolis Police Department engages in a pattern of unconstitutional policing using excessive force, including during protests, Garland said. ....

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The verdict in the Derek Chauvin murder trial has local Black community leaders such as recently elected NAACP Corpus Christi chapter president Jeremy L. Coleman hopeful for the future, not only for Corpus Christi, but across the United States and the world.
I know that the justice system worked today, he said. There was no question . . . no doubt should have been in anyone s mind that what we saw on that video resulted in the right verdict today.

Why did Derek Chauvin plead the Fifth? Defense rests case after former police officer refuses to testify

The recorded videos from May 25, last year, showed the 45-year-old kneeling on the neck of Floyd for more than nine minutes while arresting him for allegedly using a fake $20 bill. The Black man was also heard saying, “I can’t breathe” as Chauvin allegedly used excessive force on him, which resulted in his death.
Currently, he is facing second-and third-degree murder and manslaughter charges over the death of Floyd, which he has denied. After standing trial, he has not publicly defended himself. The only time he was heard justifying himself was when the jury listened to body camera footage in which, after an ambulance took Floyd away, Chauvin said to a bystander “We gotta control this guy cause he’s a sizable guy and it looks like he’s probably on something.” ....

The killing of  20-year-old Daunte Wright has sparked protests all over the country. Now, former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama have released a joint  statement.
Our hearts are heavy over yet another shooting of a Black man, Daunte Wright, at the hands of police, the Obamas said in a statement.
The fact that this could happen even as the city of Minneapolis is going through the trial of Derek Chauvin and reliving the heart-wrenching murder of George Floyd indicates not just how important it is to conduct a full and transparent investigation, but also just how badly we need to reimagine policing and public safety in this country.” ....
