Georgia Today: Georgia Vaccinations Sputter as COVID Variant Gains Ground

In most Georgia counties, COVID-19 vaccination rates have stalled. And with infections from the so-called Delta variant rapidly rising across the United States, public health experts worry the state could again see surges in serious virus cases. What’s behind the low vaccination numbers?  Host Steve Fennessy and GPB Macon Reporter and Editor Grant Blankenship try to answer that question on the latest episode of the
Georgia Today podcast.
TRANSCRIPT
Steve Fennessy: The Biden administration has set a target for vaccinating at least 70% of Americans at least once by July 4th. With just days to go before that deadline, Georgia s vaccination rollout has been sluggish. As of late June, barely one out of three Georgians had been vaccinated and rates are even lower for Georgians of color. Public health officials say that without urgent action the state is at increased risk for future surges of COVID-19, especially due to the highly contagious Delta variant. Vice P ....

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Fighting food insecurity is a top priority for one Southwest Georgia gardener. He’s doing so with community gardens and workshops on how to keep them alive.
Flint River Fresh’s Fredando Jackson said there are about 20 community gardens in the area. He said he’s seen with his own eyes how those gardens help fight food insecurity.
“I have what I call regular grocery shoppers. Like individuals that show up like every week to see what we have into the garden’s space, they sit down and have conversations with me about like kale recipes,” explained Jackson. ....

Vaccine Success And Challenge In Georgia's First COVID-19 Hotspot

There is a pair of vaccination machines in Albany, Ga.
The first one is in the employee gym at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. There, people run through the COVID-19 vaccination process with assembly-line efficiency.
A beep at the door signals a temperature check, then clerical workers with computer tablets check people in before the main event: a jab in the arm on the basketball court, where an enormous American flag is pinned to the wall.
This scene repeats about 900 times a day.
Compare that scene to a year ago, when the hospital had just recorded its first cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. By the end of March 2020, there were 490 cases in surrounding Dougherty County. And so began one of the first COVID surges in the nation.  For a time, Albany was a global COVID-19 hotspot. ....

Covid-19 devastated this small city. Volunteers are going door-to-door to ensure people are vaccinated

Covid-19 devastated this small city. Volunteers are going door-to-door to ensure people are vaccinated
The last 12 months have been tolling for Linda Harris, who lives in a small Southwest Georgia city hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic.
“I’m tired of losing grandparents, grandmamas, granddaddys and some of our small children, too.”
Back-to-back funerals and a marathon proved to be deadly, as the virus quickly spread throughout Albany, Georgia. The predominantly Black city quickly became a hot spot early in the pandemic.
As demand for the coronavirus vaccine continues to outweigh supply, the city has adopted a new approach to get the most vulnerable vaccinated. ....
