READERS' LETTERS: Buy local produce to save farmers and the planet

Don’t buy the beef from Brazil
Sir, – While our focus, quite rightly, has been on Covid and the long-hoped-for relaxation of lockdown, the Westminster Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Brazil.
President Bolsonaro, besides being one of the main Covid-deniers, is allowing the destruction of the Amazon Rainforest.
To sign a Memorandum of Understanding with such a man and his government flies in the face of the commitment the UK Government has given not just to farmers, but to the general public, that it will not allow substandard foods to enter this country.
Brazilian beef is produced using growth-promoting and product-boosting hormones. ....

READERS' LETTERS: Work together to combat climate and nature crises

© Kenny Smith
Extinction Rebellion gathered for a die-in outside the city chambers ahead of a Dundee City Council meeting.
Sir, – Derek Farmer (Enough with the sensationalist causes, Courier, February 15) accuses Extinction Rebellion of being sensationalist.
I certainly do not agree with all the approaches this organisation takes.
However, I’d encourage all of us to concentrate on saving the planet. It is a finite resource, yet we are using up the planet’s resources 1.75 times quicker than it can regenerate.
The outcome is not good, so we are suffering both a climate crisis and a nature crisis, with a recent UN report stating that nature everywhere is declining at a speed never previously seen, and that our need for ever more food and energy are the main drivers. ....

GHS' Ramage answers higher calling - Roswell Daily Record

Copyright © 2021 Roswell Daily Record
For former Goddard basketball player Taylor Ramage, life is full of adjustments. A year ago, he wasn’t afraid to tangle with players bigger than him for a rebound. Taylor has come so far in the last two years and knows what it is to work hard.
Reflecting on his senior year at Goddard, Taylor said that anything is possible and with God, all things are possible. When his senior year began, Goddard was hit by injuries allowing him to become a contributing member of the basketball team. Through sheer will and hard work, Taylor made himself into a player and it gave him the confidence to play college basketball at Wayland Baptist University. ....

READERS' LETTERS: Covid death stats suggest we should take another path

© Fusion Medical Animation on Unsplash
Sir, – Normally few lay people read Scottish NHS statistical data. However, in the case of Covid-19 this is a great pity, as the cumulative statistics for Covid-19 deaths in Scotland are very revealing:
Nobody under 20 has died in Scotland from Covid-19.
Only two healthy people under 45 years old and a further 29 from 45 to 64 have died from Covid-19 in Scotland.
Only 9% of Scottish Covid-19 deaths were under 65, and only 8% of those were otherwise healthy. Those who were both under 65 and healthy represent less than 1% of Covid-19 deaths.
These figures make a strong case that we should now take a very different approach to tackling this disease. ....
