One of the largest collections of rare marine fossils anywhere in the UK has been discovered by a couple using Google Earth. Non-professional palaeontologists Neville and Sally Hollingworth, from Swindon, discovered the site in Wiltshire during the second lockdown, while researching the geology of the area online. After being contacted by the couple, Dr Tim Ewin, a senior curator in Earth sciences at the Natural History Museum (NHM), secured funding for a dig at the site, and was amazed at the number of specimens discovered. The findings of hundreds of samples, from the Middle Jurassic (174 to 164 million years ago) should allow new research that was never before possible due to the small number of samples held in collections. ....
