CARES funds available Taylor County’s second round of individual and small business assistance programs for those impacted by the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak will open to all eligible applicants beginning Monday, March 15. An early application period opened this past Monday, March 8, for those who applied last year during the first round and were turned down. The second round has wider eligibility requirements for each program. The Taylor County Commission allocated $450,000 for each program out of the $2.4 million in remaining funds the county received in 2020 through the federal CARES Act passed by the U.S. Congress last summer. The county received a total of $3.7 million through the federal legislation, and prior to the latest programs, the county had approximately $2.4 million remaining. ....

Master Gardeners offering plant clinics at the library The Taylor County Public Library will host a monthly Master Gardener Plant Clinic on the fourth Monday of each month, beginning on Monday, Feb. 22, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Presentations will include gardening topics “from Aeration to Zinnias or what you want to know about,” said UF/IFAS Taylor County Agriculture & Natural Resources Extension Agent Lisa Strange. The first plant clinic’s presentation will be: “Newbies’ Guide to Vegetable Gardening.” “Learn what to plant, when, how and harvesting for your spring garden,” Strange said. “Take home a free ‘Vegetable Gardening Guide,’ published by the University of Florida, pre-planted veggie seeds and participate in the Plant Exchange activity (optional). Friends of the Library welcomes romance author Virginia Crane for Zoom meeting Monday, Jan. 25 The Friends of the Taylor County Public Library will host an online program via Zoom featuring author Virginia Crane on Monday, Jan. 25, starting at 5:30 p.m. Crane, whose real name is Virginia Czaja, has written 18 romantic comedies, in which most of the action takes place in small, fictional south Florida towns. A retired nurse, Crane was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up in Alexandria, Va. She and her husband moved to Port Charlotte after they retired and that’s when she started her writing career. ....
