So very much has happened since the last time I wrote to you. I sat at my desk on Jan. 6 and sobbed as the symbol of our democracy and the seat of our republic was stormed by scores of domestic insurrectionists. A gallows and noose appeared on the Capitol grounds as the terrorists searched for Vice President Mike Pence amid shouts of “hang him” because he would not, could not, invalidate the Nov. 3 vote that delivered the presidency to Joe Biden. I sobbed as I watched members of Congress hide under their seats and armed security pointed their weapons in the faces of the terrorists trying to break through the barricaded doors of the House chambers and after learning that a Capitol police officer had fatally wounded a terrorist who insisted on climbing through the broken window on a door into the chamber. That officer may very well have saved the lives of some U. S. representatives because it slowed down the thugs and gave the elected officials a chance to escape. ....
We will soon end the first week of a new year; a year that I’m sure we all hope will be a helluvalot more pleasant than 2020. But, what will 2021 bring? I hope it brings an end to scores of illnesses and deaths of friends and loved ones who were healthy one day and on a respirator hours later. I hope it brings an end to wearing masks, to quarantines, social distancing, missed celebrations, and fist bumps. I want to be able to hug people I care about without fear of becoming ill or infecting them. I hope new leadership will mean improved delivery of the COVID-19 vaccine and a call for unity. ....
To the Editor: Thank you, Congressman John Carter, R-Round Rock, for not supporting a Texas lawsuit seeking to overturn the result of the Nov. 3 presidential election. You showed courage in sticking up for your beliefs, as did the Republican officials in Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin who chose democracy over pleasing President Donald Trump. Thank you, Republicans, for following the laws and putting the country first. And thank you, thank you, thank you to the more than 81 million Americans who voted for Joe Biden for president. As Biden said Monday, âNow it is time to turn the page as weâve done throughout our history. To unite. To heal.â ....
