How the pandemic changed higher education in California

For many, the coronavirus pandemic was expected to last a few weeks, at most. Instead, after more than a year, it’s completely changed higher education in a way that will persist even after campuses have repopulated and California and the U.S. reach some form of herd immunity.
The most significant change has been to instruction and learning, with the vast majority of students and faculty in online classes. But there have been other changes, such as an intense focus on mental health and campuses becoming more flexible with how they operate.
“Higher education isn’t actually known for being nimble,” said Lande Ajose, senior policy adviser for higher education to Gov. Gavin Newsom. “But to take a system, or a set of systems or institutions, where you have an excess of 3 million students and say in the course of two to three weeks, we’ll move students to distance learning is enormous.” ....

Food Hubs Bring Local Food to Schools – Mix 107.3 KIOW

Iowa children at 80 schools and early care centers ate healthy local food last fall despite the pandemic, thanks to the Local Produce and Protein Program grant from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (which was funded by the CARES Act). More than half of the schools partnered with a local food hub for procurement.
Food hubs are organizations that connect farmers with buyers, to aggregate and often deliver locally raised vegetables, dairy products and meat. Food hubs can help institutions purchase local food at a larger scale, expanding the market for Iowa-grown food and bringing more income to local farmers. Ten hubs operating across Iowa in 2020 belong to the Iowa Food Hub Managers Working Group, supported by staff at Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and Iowa Valley Resource Conservation and Development. Eight of the hubs supported the Local Produce and Protein Program in some way. ....
