If you’ve recently seen two or four people batting around what looks like a whiffle ball on what looks like a miniature tennis court using what look like beach paddles, what you’ve actually witnessed is the fastest-growing sport in America: pickleball. Participation shot up 21.3 percent from 2019 to 2020, and Denver is no exception to that trend.
Pickleball was on the rise before COVID-19, says Rachel Heise, the general manager of 32-year-old Game-Set-Match a local racquet and paddle sports outfitter with four stores in the metro area but as an outdoor, inherently distanced, low-barrier-to-entry sport, its popularity exploded during the pandemic. News: The Colorado Health Foundation has announced Erin Brown will be taking the helm as vice president of community investment and impact effective July 6. Brown is currently deputy chief of staff and first chief equity officer for Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock, and implemented the City of Denver’s Race and Social Justice Framework.
“Erin brings a depth of knowledge about equity, leadership and coaching, and has extensive managerial and operational experience,” said Chief Impact Officer Amy Latham. “I look forward to working with her to accelerate our progress toward advancing health equity in Colorado.”
Previously, Erin served as deputy director for Denver Parks and Recreation, director of resident services for Kappa Management, vice president of programs and development for the Urban League of Metropolitan Denver, and executive director for the YMCA of Metropolitan Denver. ....

The car-free City Park fight is about giving our kids an equitable future of parks, public transit and safe streets.
At 8 a.m. in central Denver, there’s plenty of traffic. There’s noise, exhaust pollution and hurried commuters. But throughout City Park, groups of children gather with backpacks and water bottles. They hug their parents goodbye and set out to climb trees. They admire red-tailed hawks nesting nearby but know not to chase geese. They observe the cycle of the moon. They cherish the nature found in City Park, the crown jewel of Denver’s parks.
Worldmind Nature School has permits to utilize City Park as an outdoor classroom for students in preschool through fifth grade. They’ve used the park for several years now, but this year offered a more robust outdoor classroom; nature flourished thanks to the absence of cars. DENVER — The spring snowstorm brought down trees and limbs across the Denver metro area knocking out power, damaging vehicles and creating a weight of work for arborists.
Dane Douglas, an arborist with Dandy Tree Care, said his phone has been ringing nonstop. He was cutting up a tree limb, estimated to be about 30 feet, that fell towards Downing Street just south of Washington Park. ....
