Community prays for love, life, liberty


AUBURN — “This is God’s event,” said Erma Casselman, county coordinator of the 30th annual DeKalb County prayer rally Thursday at the Kruse Plaza south of Auburn.
“It’s so good to get together in prayer again,” she said. Last year’s event was canceled due to the pandemic. “We’ve had a tough year, but God is on the throne and He loves to hear from His people.”
The rally celebrated the theme, “Love, Life and Liberty,” drawing from II Corinthians 3:17 that reads: “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where is the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty.” ....

Veteran receives medals he earned 70 years ago


AUBURN — Seventy years after he served with the U.S. Army in Korea, this week an Auburn man received the full recognition he deserves.
In a ceremony Wednesday at American Legion Post 97, Raymond Kelley, 89, was presented with a Silver Service Star for participating in five separate campaigns of the war. A Korean War Service Medal awarded by the Republic of Korea also was pinned on his jacket.
“Perhaps there is no other mission that is more important than making sure our veterans are properly recognized for their service,” said Travis Holcomb of the DeKalb County Veterans Service Office.
Kelley served from 1950-1952 with the 25th Infantry Division in the Korean War. He also received a Purple Heart for sustaining wounds in service. ....

Garrett ending school year on high note


GARRETT — ILearn testing at Garrett has been met with little enthusiasm, according to J.E. Ober and middle school administrators.
Elementary Principal Kristi Surfus told school board members Monday the new state test is being administered as required, but the results will be stale by the time they are available at the end of the school year.
“This test does not honor students’ thinking,” she said, adding teachers currently can pull up-to-the-minute data without the test. Classroom schedules have been interrupted in order to facilitate the testing that has no time restrictions. Testing has been taking place over multiple days, she added. ....
