In 1948, Dr. Michael E. DeBakey accepts the chairship of the Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine.
1950s
In 1951, Dr. Denton Cooley joins the faculty of Baylor College of Medicine.
Michael E. DeBakey performs first successful carotid endarterectomy in 1953, establishing the field of surgery for strokes.
Denton Cooley and Dan McNamara start the Heart Center at Texas Children’s Hospital in 1954.
Denton Cooley performs first open-heart operation in 1956

Texas Heart Institute is established in 1962 by Dr. Denton Cooley.

Texas State Cemetery in Austin: Historical figures buried there


A crowd of perhaps 100 people gathered near the coffin on a mild spring day. Friends, family and clergy spoke briefly and read from scripture. 
Before and after the graveside memorial for legendary public relations lion Julian Read advisor to six presidents at the Texas State Cemetery, admirers, clad in dark hues, mixed among the marble and granite monuments that bedeck Republic Hill, where some of the state s founders are buried.
Read, who died May 8 at age 93 after a full life, had witnessed Texas history.
Across a dinner table, he could recount details about the Nov. 22, 1963, assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas he was the first spokesman to explain to the press what happened in the presidential limousine. Over lunch, Read could regale you with perfectly polished anecdotes about governors, legislators and civic leaders, or chat about the finer points of midcentury modern design. ....

Last year’s National Nurses Week theme “The Year of the Nurse” continues for 2021, with front-line nurse caregivers fighting to save lives during the COVID-19 pandemic that began in early 2020. Then, as a winter storm hit in February this year, Texas nurses were confronted with the great challenge of power outages and water shortages but still rose to the challenge to provide top care for their patients.
Nurses Week, May 6-12, 2021, brings to light a year that demanded changes in safety protocols throughout the medical community, such as remote telehealth patient visits, visitor limitations and masking requirements. Along with patient care also came new duties for diagnostic testing and, once vaccines became available, health care professionals began vaccinating the public. ....
