Daily figures for the number of deaths from confirmed cases of Covid-19 published during the pandemic have highlighted shortcomings in the country’s death notification system.

An inquest into the death of a worker at Kildare Chilling Company a year ago will take place this month.
Inquests hearings in the Coroner s District of Kildare were suspended since January due to the Covid-19 pandemic but are resuming on Friday, May 21.
Separate Garda and Health and Safety Authority (HSA) investigations were carried out following the death of Binak Cokaj, aged 55, at around 9.50am on May 14, 2020.
Albanian national Mr Cokaj, who lived in Monasterevin, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The body of the man was taken to Naas Hospital afterwards. ....

A new report from the County Kildare coroner reveals a 53% increase in total notified deaths reported in the year March 2020 to February 2021.
Professor Denis Cusack also insisted that inquests, which have been suspended since January due to Level 5 restrictions, need to resume as soon as possible.
The Coroner compiled a 45-page report which he has circulated to the Minister for Justice and Minister for Health.
Prof Cusack said there were 867 deaths between March 2020 and February 2021 compared to 567 on average for each of the preceding five years. ....

A large backlog of inquests has been built up in County Kildare due to a ban on hearings since January because of Covid-19 restrictions.
Grieving families are being forced to wait for death certificates as they try to finalise matters in relation to issues such as wills and life insurance and pension policies.
Coroner for Kildare Prof Denis Cusack said that he recognises the urgency for families in resuming hearings at Naas Courthouse as soon as possible and will be raising this with the Department of Justice and the Courts Service. ....
