By Allan Lengel and Violet Ikonomova Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon, who was battling Covid-19 and on a ventilator for nearly three weeks, died Thursday night at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, according to sources. He was 65. Napoleon had just won another a four-year term in November, when he was unopposed. Less than three weeks later, he was hospitalized Nov. 22. A Detroit native, Napoleon graduated from Cass Technical High School. He earned a bachelor s degree from University of Detroit Mercy and juris doctor from the Detroit College of Law. Napoleon joined the Detroit Police Department in 1975, rising to chief under Mayor Dennis Archer from 1998 to 2001. In 2004, he was named assistant Wayne County Executive and in 2009, he became sheriff.

Napoleon died Thursday night at Henry Ford Hospital surrounded by family. He was placed on a ventilator in late November and a prayer vigil was held in front of the Wayne County Sherrif s Office with family and friends rallying around him.

(WXYZ) â Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon has died at the age of 65 after a battle with COVID-19, 7 Action News has learned. Napoleon was diagnosed with COVID-19 on Nov. 19 and hospitalized two days later.
He was born in Detroit in 1955 and was entwined with Wayne County long before his public service. A Cass Tech grad, Napoleon received degrees from Detroit Mercy and Detroit College of Law before the start of his tenured law enforcement career in 1975.

Who was Benny Napoleon?
He was one of seven children.
He attended Cass Technical High School before receiving degrees from the University of Detroit and the Detroit College of Law.
He then joined the Detroit Police Department in 1975 and began rising through the ranks.
