Two residents of the Jackson apartments, at 1210 Jackson Avenue in Detroit Lakes, have recently gone public with their complaints about ongoing health hazards in the building. The residents said they tried to work with the Fargo-based management company, but became frustrated when their concerns were met with delays and unprofessional repairs. Now, they are trying to raise awareness about the conditions of the building in a hope that changes will be made and new prospective tenets won t suffer the same unhealthy conditions.

Members of the Willow Springs and Deerwood Park neighborhoods voiced their concerns, and cheered, the Detroit Lakes City Council s vote to limit the scope of their utilities expansion to the area during the council s regular meeting at The Pavilion in Detroit Lakes on June 8, 2021. Residents said they were concerned about the cost of the special assessments associated with city sewer and water hookups for their larger lot sizes and wanted street improvements only, which council members agreed to, and voted into the new five-year capital improvement plan. Council members also approved a submission for a $1 million bond request for next year s state legislative session to improve the facilities at the Washington Avenue Ballpark.
Detroit Lakes City Council approves renovations for Holmes Theatre; denies McDonald s dual drive-thru plan
The Detroit Lakes City Council approved renovations to the Historic Holmes Theatre, estimated between $500,000 to $700,000, during their regular meeting on Tuesday, May 11, 2021. The largest share for the proposed remodel, $300,000, will be used to update the theatre s ballroom from a gymnasium with a tiered stage into an event space with an additional $40,000 to be used to provide updated club seating to the theatre s balcony. Council members also denied a parking space variance for McDonald s, on a 5-4 vote, which would have allowed the restaurant to construct a new dual drive-thru lane ordering system.
