Pittsfield weighing options to fill two seats on School Board
Published: 5/5/2021 2:15:46 PM
Eight days after announcing the sudden retirement of two of its members, both of whom had another year left on their terms, the Pittsfield School Board will meet Thursday to begin searching for their replacements.
Interim Superintendent John Graziano said this week that he’ll submit his list of 10 candidates to fill the slots left by Bea Douglas and Ted Mitchell. Neither board member gave any indication last month about retiring before completing their three-year terms.
The School Board will ultimately decide on its two new members, after Graziano gives them the letters of interest that he preferred. He was unsure how long the decision would take. ....

HE leaders hail Biden plan to boost access and retention

HE leaders hail Biden plan to boost access and retention
United States President Joe Biden has proposed to Congress a US$109 billion plan to provide two free years of community college education to all Americans, “so that every student has the ability to obtain a degree or certificate”.
In addition, he is calling for a substantial hike in the level of Pell Grants for students from economically disadvantaged families to help them seek a certificate or a two- or four-year degree, requiring a further US$80 billion investment.
Biden is proposing to raise the maximum Pell Grant award by US$1,400, provide two years of subsidised tuition to historically black colleges and other minority-serving institutions for students from families who earn less than US$125,000 and are enrolled in a four-year college, and establish a grant programme to fund student success services at colleges that serve a high number of low-income students. ....

Two of the five members of the Pittsfield School Board have abruptly resigned, blindsiding many in town and creating a rush to fill the spots.
School Board Chairman Adam Gauthier confirmed the departure of Bea Douglas and Ted Mitchell, two long-time officials in town. Both had one year left on their terms.
“Bea Douglas and Ted Mitchell have resigned due to health and personal reasons,” Gauthier said in an email. “It is unfortunate to lose them and the amount of experience that they brought to the table.” ....

The Long Fight to Cancel Student Loans

How student debtors took a radical idea to the mainstream
Illustrations by Lyndon Hayes
In the summer of 2007, Thomas Gokey had just graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and he was thinking about how much his degree had cost him. His diploma was a simple piece of paper, but it came with a price tag of thousands of dollars dollars that were themselves pieces of paper, transmitted to him in the form of student loans, which he now owed to the federal government. While chewing on this thought, he had an idea for a project that would occupy him for much of the next year. He obtained a letter of permission from the Treasury Department’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing to go to a Federal Reserve bank of his choice and pick out some shredded bills from its stores of mutilated currency. One day, he walked over to the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, five blocks from the Art Institute, and asked for some money. ....
