Tropical cyclone season in a La Niña year can be a total tease. Anticipation builds for weeks, if not months. Old guys tell you crusty yet epic stories of that 28 day swell in 1975. The weather maps look good, and then they don’t.
Then at some point, things start popping.
That’s just what happened during the first week of February, when two tropical cyclones popped in quick succession, and loaded up several days of magic along Australia’s best known super-points. ....

Great months of surf rarely start with a bang. Instead they kinda grow on you, swell after swell, till at some point everyone wakes up to another perfect morning and thinks, “Whoa! How long’s this been going on!”
That’s how February seems to be shaping up for surf communities around Australia but particularly on the east coast, where the first pulses of a classic swell event are beginning to arrive. ....

2020 Revision: Looking Back on The Year in Surfing That Was - Wavelength Surf Magazine

Paul Evans
Somebody’s has to speak up for the forgotten victims, like 2016. The year that gave us Brexit, Trump and killed everyone who’d ever thought about making a decent song or film, had enjoyed a level of infamy as the gruesome year everyone wanted to turn off and on again, until 2020 came along and put 2016 back in its bland to middling irrelevant little vanilla box.
If 2016 was kicking life while it was down, 2020 was Tyson uppercuts to the face whilst underwater in a crashed plane going over the falls in a tsunami.
And yet for all the misery, as seen from the narrow prism of surfers, we were more concerned for our wave counts than R-numbers. ....

Two days of big swell and strong winds is causing the foam to blow into shore and congeal.
All beaches along in the Gold Coast have been closed for a third consecutive day due to the rough conditions.
Residents are being urged to take care when entering the foam, with a number of dogs getting lost in the bubbles yesterday. ....

Gold Coast beaches become bubble baths

Relentless swell and heavy rain causes sea foam in Queensland.
Foam whipped up by wild seas and strong winds has blanketed beaches on the Gold Coast.
Families and children have been playing in the bubbles, with piles more than a metre in height in some areas.
Waves of foam have swamped the Currumbin Beach Surf Club, with tourists and ocean photographers stopping to take photos of the bizarre sight.
“It s incredible – once every few years we get this,” amateur photographer Ted Grambeau told 9News.
