But during her freshman year at UT, she took the course Introduction to Asian American History, which taught her more about her heritage and broadened her community. She became friends with other Asian American students and joined organizations including the Asian Desi Pacific Islander American Collective. ....
Sunday, February 14, 2021 As lovebirds hunker down together to celebrate Valentine’s Day with what looks to be a romantic evening snowfall, rumors swirl that Texas’ grid infrastructure might not be able to handle the upcoming inclement weather. Many Texans quickly learn that Texas is the only state in the nation with its own power grid, mainly to avoid federal regulation. That grid is operated by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), a company that releases warnings that “rolling outages” in duration of 10-45 minutes could befall customers across the state if demand outstrips supply. As a precautionary measure, UT announces that campus will close at 4 p.m. and remain closed until Wednesday, February 17, at 8 a.m. That includes all virtual classes as well. I speak of course about one of the best lines from Edgar Wright s 2010 movie Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, spoken in shock by Michael Cera, who stars with Mary Elizabeth Winstead and a who s who of bright young comedy talents. The film is based on Bryan Lee O Malley s popular Scott Pilgrim graphic novels, and on Friday, it s getting a remastered anniversary re-release in AMC theaters, including in Austin. If you ve never gotten a chance to watch it, this incredibly Canadian tale finds Toronto townie Scott Pilgrim (Cera), a self-involved loser in a not-great band, become fixated on the mysterious Ramona Flowers (Winstead). But in order to date her, he must first defeat her seven evil exes, battles that Wright films as visually delightful crosses between video game punch-ups and comic book pow-bang-zooms. ....
Animated Apocalyptic comedy Scavengers is one of the titles featured in TUFF, the free streaming celebration of shorts made by UT Austin students, and available for free this week via Alamo on Demand A post-apocalyptic Lego animation, a high stakes mystery horror film about a ventriloquist, and a documentary portrait of multidisciplinary artist Cary Fagan: all stories by UT students streaming for free via Alamo On Demand as part of this week s 12th Annual Texas Union Film Festival (TUFF). Running April 5-9, TUFF week will feature nightly virtual meetups where each night, festival attendees can hear filmmakers “talk about the filmmaking process, answer questions, and meet,” explained Andrea Olivares, director of TUFF 2021. Every night of TUFF week at 6PM, there will be filmmaker panels held over Zoom, culminating in the closing night judges panel and awards ceremony.
