Days after Gov. Greg Abbott announced he will lift many coronavirus restrictions next week, including a statewide face mask mandate, the Texas Supreme Court has largely opened up the courts as well.
Texas courthouses no longer need a state safety review before conducting in-person hearings, including jury trials. And requirements that people wear masks and socially distance will be left up to local officials, according to the all-Republican court’s revised emergency order issued Friday. ....

When Gene Gaines’ wife died in the 1970s, he was told she must be buried in the segregated Black/Mexican-American section of the City of Lubbock Cemetery. Offended by the city’s racial discrimination, Gaines – Lubbock’s first Black lawyer – decided to take legal action to desegregate the all-Anglo Lubbock City Council, charged with cemetery policy. ....

Office of the Texas Governor issued the following announcement on Dec. 17.
Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Susan Kelly as Judge of the 54th Judicial District Court in McLennan County, effective January 1, 2021, for a term set to expire on December 31, 2022, or until her successor shall be duly elected and qualified.
Susan Kelly of Waco is an attorney in private practice. She is board certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, and is licensed to practice law in both Texas and Colorado. She is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, The Federalist Society, The Judge Abner V. McCall American Inn of Court, and the McLennan County Law Library Committee. She is a member and a former president of both the Waco-McLennan County Bar Association and the McLennan County Criminal Defense Attorneys Association and a board member of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Educational Institute. The day that Dallas salon owner Shelley Luther was arrested for reopening her business in defiance of Texas emergency stay-home orders, Robin Torres sat in a county jail 500 miles away facing the consequences of his own failure to follow such rules.
Luther became a conservative darling this spring for her provocation, spending two days in custody on contempt of court charges. Largely in response to her case, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott eventually prohibited the authorities from jailing anyone for violating the stay-home orders established to stop the spread of COVID-19. ....
