Buried Treasures

Buried Treasures
Sifting through stored collections, the Dallas Museum of Art discovers a tradition of spiritual subtlety among Texas artists.
Texas’ major museums have lately taken to revealing in public some of their best-kept secrets: They own substantial collections of Texas art, which are usually relegated to the storage vaults. Last year the Houston Museum of Fine Arts offered an intriguing sampler of its five-hundred-plus-piece Texas collection. The latest unveiling, at the Dallas Museum of Art, is “The State I’m In: Texas Art at the DMA,” more than one hundred items selected by curator Annegreth Nill from a trove representing at least 250 Texas-born or Texas-based artists. (Later this month, the San Antonio Museum Association will also air its collection of Texas art, some dating back to 1845, at the Witte Museum.) ....

The Risk-Taking, Boundary-Breaking Austin Gallery That Changed the Face of Texas Art

The visual art scene, however, lacked a center. Local artists were creating work that could compete in New York, but Texas galleries weren’t interested in showing contemporary art, and few buyers knew what to select to impress their friends. “It was just bluebonnet paintings,” remembers the artist Barry Buxkamper, who was an undergraduate student at UT when he first met Hickey. This was the void Hickey set out to fill.
The name “A Clean Well-Lighted Place” was a reference to a rather bleak story by Ernest Hemingway, who was one of the subjects of Hickey’s dissertation, and a literal description of what he wanted to create: a gallery with good art on the walls and good natural light. It was also an inside joke about what the gallery represented to him: the controlled burn of his previous life as an academic. “I coined the first axiom of ‘combat aesthetics,’ ” he later said. “Nothing can light up the place you are like a burning bridge behind you.”  ....

Deep in the heart of Heritage Auctions May 22 Texas Art Sale, something for everyone
Robert Jenkins Onderdonk (American, 1853-1917), The Afternoon Walk. Hand painted porcelain tile, 39-3/8 x 55-1/8 inches. Estimate: $25,000 - $35,000.
DALLAS, TX
.- Seven months after David Bates painting Crab Legs set a world record for the Dallas artist, his hometown Heritage Auctions will offer yet another spectacular work in the upcoming Texas Art Signature Auction. Because it wouldn t be a Texas art event without a David Bates.
His Burning Leaves from 1983, a decidedly Lone Star scene set among the swirling smoke and chopped wood and burnt-orange of late autumn, serves as one of the centerpieces in Heritage s May 22 Texas Art event. It features a man at rest, on break, his back bent against the barren tree upon which he has propped his rake. He is clad in green plaid and khaki work pants, his hat slightly titled away from his brow. You can almost hear the crackle of the fl ....
