With Thousands Hospitalized For COVID-19 In North Texas, Hospitals Are 'Stretched Very Thin'

Hospitalizations in North Texas due to COVID-19 have already set new and dismal records in the New Year.
More than 4,000 hospital patients across 18 counties in the Dallas-Fort Worth area had COVID-19 when this week began.
When cases were spiking over the summer, that number never reached 2,000.
“I can tell you that we’re stretched very thin right now,” said Barclay Berdan, CEO of Texas Health Resources.
Since September, the numbers of hospitalized coronavirus patients have been surging. About 30% of all the patients in North Texas hospitals are now COVID-19 positive, according to state data. ....

North Texas counties making changes to help elderly, at-risk communities with COVID-19 vaccine registration issues

Texas Health Resources new vaccination sites in Tarrant County are pulling names from the county s waitlist.
As of Tuesday evening, UT Southwestern and Parkland were pulling from their own patient rolls and sign-ups, while Dallas County s hub was using its online waitlist.
“We’re just going to have to reach out to the community and get everybody informed,” said Tarrant County Health Director Dr. Vinny Taneja.
Taneja said it’s not just knowledge but technology that’s a problem for many.
“A lot of people are either they don’t have the access to go online or when they get online, they get confused,” he said. ....

A critical care physician says COVID-19 vaccines mark the “beginning of the end” to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Wednesday’s COVID-19 vaccine felt like “hope in a bottle,” said Dr. Kerim Razack, partner with Texas Pulmonary & Critical Care Consultants at Texas Health Southwest. As one of three critical care doctors at his southwest Fort Worth hospital, Dr. Razack has worked six weeks straight. Since March, he estimates that his critical care team has seen upwards of 100 local residents die from COVID-19, often after struggling for up to several weeks on ventilators. ....

Area hospitals receive COVID-19 vaccine

It was a big week for the medical community and its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Local hospitals across Denton, Collin and Dallas counties were among those to receive its first shipment of the COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer.
Texas Health Resourceâs central pharmacy received 5,850 doses Tuesday and stored them in a freezer to keep the vaccines at minus 94 degrees Fahrenheit.
Ultimately 16 hospitals within Texas Health Resourcesâ system received the vaccination and began administering the vaccine to its front line employees throughout the week.
Texas Health Frisco gave its front line employees the vaccine Wednesday morning.
Dr. Janie Sanders, medical director for Texas Health Friscoâs emergency department, and Dr. Sulaiman Abawi, also of the hospitalâs emergency department, received the first doses. Sanders was the first doctor to care for a COVID patient at THF in March, the hospital said. ....
