After a bone-crunching drive along a softer inland track, it is a positive sign. The group fear for the plight of the dingo population after bushfires burnt through more than 87,000 hectares of the World Heritage-listed island known as K gari by the Butchulla traditional owners. Fraser Island, situated about 250 kilometres north of Brisbane, is World-Heritage listed and the world s largest sand island. It will be alleged on October 14, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service rangers on Fraser Island (K’Gari) found an illegal campfire within the Duling Camp Zone of Eastern Beach. Rangers said the fire was covered in sand but still radiating heat and as a result, vegetation nearby had caught alight and started a bushfire to the north-west of the campsite. The bushfire took hold and over the following weeks burned extensive parts of the world heritage-listed island. On Monday, Maryborough detectives charged four people with lighting the campfire after a joint investigation with the parks service. A fifth person also faces penalties. ....
20:21 EDT, 21 December 2020 20 shares Four men have been charged over a campfire on Fraser Island that allegedly sparked a devastating blaze which burned through the world heritage site for six weeks. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service were alerted to an allegedly illegal campfire within the Duling camp zone of Eastern Beach, north of Orange Creek, on October 14. Police said the rangers arrived and found a campfire that was covered in sand and radiating heat. The out-of-control bushfire was allegedly sparked after native vegetation caught alight from the campfire, spreading to the north west of the campsite.
