Aspen’s elected officials last week decided to not make the preservation of locally serving businesses a critical goal due to the complexity of the issue, but they lamented that the town has changed significantly and local residents are being priced out. “What I mean are places for locals to still enjoy this community, and we’ve seen such a deterioration of it,” Mayor Torre said during last week’s council goal-setting retreat. “Currently, we have several locally priced affordable restaurants that are not in operation because of redevelopment, and it’s impacting us community wide.” Recognizing that controlling the market is nearly impossible, council members agreed to continue working on the issue with willing partners, like the chamber of commerce and the business community. ....
At Aspen School District, some expenses for the 2021-22 fiscal year are cropping up before sufficient tax revenue rolls in to cover those costs. A zero-interest loan from the state of Colorado will help bridge the gap; the Board of Education swiftly and unanimously authorized Tuesday morning borrowing as much as $6 million from the state to address the short-term cash flow deficit. The approved resolution indicates that the district can repay the loan by June 25. The loan contributes to general fund expenses that can’t be covered by other, more specified sources such as the transportation, food service and bond redemption funds. ....

The calendar vote was postponed several times to give district administrators planning the calendar more time to seek community feedback on the proposed changes, which come with an extensive list of pros and cons for students, families, teachers and other stakeholders. “We think we’ve addressed that through really hard listening over the past six weeks,” Superintendent David Baugh said during a calendar update Tuesday evening. ....
Kelsey Brunner/The Aspen Times There’s no shortage of community input when it comes to the 2021-22 Aspen School District calendar: a recent community feedback survey posted on the district website has garnered hundreds of responses, according to district Superintendent David Baugh. That feedback has led to some changes to the proposed 2021-22 academic calendar, Baugh said during Tuesday night’s Board of Education meeting. The revisions primarily impact day-to-day scheduling for students, according to Baugh’s presentation. A new, split schedule moves the elementary school hours earlier in the day: students in kindergarten through fourth-grade would arrive at 8 a.m. and be released at 3 p.m., with teacher hours from 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. ....
