Prince Philip brought 'intelligent, feisty, plainspoken' personality to Manitoba

In June of 1997, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh decided to make a last-minute trip.
Leaving his official duties in Toronto, he travelled to Manitoba to visit with families and Canadian military personnel picking up the pieces left behind by the Flood of the Century in the small town of Ste. Agathe.
He felt this sense of service, with who he was and the position he held, in a time of crisis like this that he should be there to show the support, Don Leitch, former clerk of the Executive Council in Manitoba, recalled Friday. ....

Manitobans remember Prince Philip, royal with 'zest for life' who supported youth and research


The Royal Family will probably never be the same. You know, to most people in the world, Queen Elizabeth has been the only queen that we ve known. And, of course, her husband, Prince Philip, was always by her side.
One of Prince Philip s visits to Manitoba that MacAulay remembers is when the royal came to present the Duke of Edinburgh s Award, which was established in 1956 and promotes personal achievement among young people across the country.
