Edward Markey coming to Springfield to announce his support for efforts to prevent its opening. City Councilor Jesse Lederman, who has long advocated against the plant proposed by Palmer Paving at its Page Boulevard property, reached out to Markey who was here in the region visiting the Holyoke Soldiers Home on Feb. 18. Lederman, accompanied by fellow colleagues on the City Council including Tim Allen and Michael Fenton, was joined by state Sens. Adam Gomez and Eric Lesser as well as neighborhood residents and members of The Springfield Climate Justice Coalition (SCJC). ....

Holyoke’s open-arms approach to the industry has attracted interest from investors drawn to the low utility rates and former mills ripe for conversion. The state Cannabis Control Commission has already issued around 40 provisional licenses for businesses in Holyoke, the most per capita of any Massachusetts community. “Holyoke has become a site where we clustered the industry, particularly for manufacturing,” said Marcos Marrero, who stepped down in January as the city’s director of planning and development. “Specifically, growing the plant, processing the active ingredient, whether it’s the THC oil or the flower.” ....

Charlie Baker to not allow rule changes favorable to Springfield biomass plant Updated Feb 17, 2021; Facebook Share SPRINGFIELD Area organizations that have fought against a proposed biomass energy plant in East Springfield for the last 12 years urged Gov. Charlie Baker on Wednesday to reject rule changes favorable to the project. Protesters gathered outside the state office building on Dwight Street, presenting a petition to Baker signed by 38 organizations. The petition demanded that Baker withdraw proposed amendments to the state’s Renewable Portfolio Standard that ”would allow inefficient and dirty biomass power plants like the (Palmer Renewable Energy) plant to qualify as renewable energy in Massachusetts and collect millions of dollars in subsidies each year.” ....
Monday, Dec. 14 Assault on Dwight Street: At 9:23 a.m., a caller reported being assaulted with a broomstick while on a visit to a group home. The call resulted in the arrest of one woman. Suspicious person on Pleasant Street: At 2:21 p.m., a caller told police two men were in her building, holding up an Eversource bill and talking about solar panels. Malicious damage on Lagrange Street: At 7:12 p.m., a caller reported someone cut the wires to her Christmas lights, the third time this has happened. She told police someone also cut her lights last year, for no apparent reason. ....
